Putnam Hill Historic District
Greenwich, CT
The Putnam Hill Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This district, which once served as the focal point of the town of Greenwich, is named in honor of General Israel Putnam. In 1779, General Putnam, a distinguished figure of the Revolutionary War, famously evaded British pursuit by descending from Knapp's Tavern down the steep hill to Stamford, where he successfully alerted the militia. This significant act is commemorated on the seal of the Town of Greenwich.
